I sammenligning med The Trashmens “Surfin Bird”, der oven i købet er opstået som en kombination af The Rivingtons to sange “Papa Oom Mow Mow” og “The Bird’s the Word”, så er Chuck Berrys sangtekster nærmest noveller og små romaner. Men den sammenligning holder ikke så langt, for teksten hos Trashmen har minimal betydning. Ja, deres betydningsløshed er netop pointen, fordi det er den underliggende støjende rock, der giver mening. Lige som Little Richards Tutti frutti eller Sam the Shams wooly bully. 

I øvrigt sagsøgte The Rivingtons The Trashmen for plagiat – og vandt.

Hvad har jeg i posen?

Hvor finder man inspiration til at høre ny (evt. ny gammel) musik? Selvfølglig kan man læse anmeldeser, fx i Gaffa og andre musikblade, lytte til radioen (selv om det primært er mainstream) eller surfe rundt på nettet på må og få. For mig har andre musikelskeres udgravninger altid spillet en rolle. Et godt eksempel er den serie, som Hollywoods Amoeba-pladebutik (og meget andet) kører på Youtube under title What’s in your bag? Ideen er, at en gæst får lov til at vælge nogle plader (i butikken), som vedkommende godt kan lide. Og det kan være meget forskelligt afhængigt af, hvem det er – fx Stella McCartney eller Metallicas Lars Ulrich. Her er det Huey Lewis, der giver sit bud på lytteværdig musik. Så fik jeg ørerne op for Johnny Taylor igen…
