Coronatidssange: The Police – Ghost in the machine

Zenyatta Mondattà blev det sidste album med The Police i den rene trioform. I 1981 kom deres fjerde album Ghost in the machine, der blev en stor succes for gruppen. Men væk var den elementære trioform, hvor de tre musikere i kraft af voldsom ungdommelig energi og stor spilleglæde formåede at tilføre trioformen en sjælden kraftfuldhed og opfindsomhed. I stedet fik man et album med masser at tilsat syntheziserlyd og blæsere. Et mere ordinært album på sæt og vis, selv om pladen rummer masser af gode sange. Men også et album, der antydede, at The Police nærmede sig et sted, hvor deres veje ville skilles. Guitarist Andy Summers udtalte meget rammende følgende om pladen:
I have to say I was getting disappointed with the musical direction around the time of Ghost in the Machine. With the horns and synth coming in, the fantastic raw-trio feel—all the really creative and dynamic stuff—was being lost. We were ending up backing a singer doing his pop songs.
