John Lennons Jukebox

De sidste par dage har jeg lyttet til dobbeltcd’em “John Lennon’s jukebox” fra 2004 (og som i dag er svært at opdrive til en rimelig pris). Den jukebox, titlen henviser til en transportabel jukebox – en Swiss KB Discomatic, som Lennon var ejeren af og som dukkede op på en Christie-auktion i 1989, hvor den blev solgt for 2500 £. Lennon købte den angiveligt i 1965 og fyldte den med 40 singleplader, som han holdt af og kunne have med, når han rejste rundt. Om han faktisk slæbte rundt på den tunge sag, vides ikke med sikkerhed.
Køberen af maskinen, musikpromoteren John Midwinter, forsøgte efterfølgende at katalogisere de sange, Lennon havde fyldt på og havde anført på den dertil hørende katalogliste. Især det sidste voldte vanskeligheder på grund af Lennons håndskrift, og Midwinter døde af kræft, inden han nåede at se sit arbejde gjort færdig. Men i 2004 lavede The South Bank Show en dokumentarudsendelse om jukeboxen, hvor man ikke alene spillede sange fra jukeboxen men også fik nogle af kunstnerne og berømtheder som fx Sting til at kommentere musikken.

Titlen på dobbeltcd’en skal tages med et lille gran salt. Der er tale om en rekonstruktion, men den giver alligevel et fint indtryk af, hvad Lennon havde lyttet til i midten af tresserne og en fornemmelse af, hvor Beatles hentede deres inspiration i den første halvdel af karrieren. En stor del af sangene kan man lytte til på Last.fm her. Det er en fin opsamling med lutter gode skæringer, og den fortjener at blive genoptrykt…
